Between 1502 and 1518, Spain shipped out hundreds of Spanish-born Africans, called Ladinos[SOUND ALOT LIKE LATINOS HMMMMM], to work as labourers, especially in the mines. In 1518 the first shipment of African-born slaves was sent to the West Indies. The Spaniards, although major purchasers of slaves, did not trade on the African coast until the late 1700s. However, it is estimated that 95 percent of the African slaves transported to the New world from the 15th to the 19th century were sent to Latin America and the Caribbean. In total, the Spanish colonies received about 2 million.Spanish laws designed to protect treasure fleets from South and Central America kept the number of slaves brought to Spanish colonies very low. Flotas would depart once each year, and few ships would come in bearing slaves. These restrictive laws kept the slave populations extremely low on Cuba and Puerto Rico until the 1760s.
In 1762 the British took Havana, Cuba. During this time more than 10,000 slaves - a number that would have taken 20 years to import on other islands - were brought in to the port. This change is almost directly related to the opening of Spanish slave trade to other powers in the 18th century .
The first larger group of slaves (300) arrive in Cuba in 1520 PLUS the Spanish introduced slavery to Jamaica,1655 Throughout the Caribbean, slavery was associated with sugar plantations. Sugar production made each island a single-crop economy, entirely dependent upon colonial trade. Large numbers of slaves worked on huge plantations and slave communities developed. As the slave population increased, large black majorities developed who were ruled by white minorities. This became the typical Caribbean society, divided by race, culture, and class.
In Belize, slaves were used for logging. Therefore, slavery and Belizean society developed differently from other parts of the Caribbean where slaves and their families worked and lived in plantations. Slaves in Belize worked in scattered gangs in the forests, separated from their families in Belize City.
But there were similarities. Belizean masters had control over the lives of their slaves, and treated them like mere property. But because of the kind of work they did slaves were able to maintain some control over their lives. African slaves were the majority of the population before the middle of the 18th century. An early census in 1790 showed that three quarters of the population were slaves, a tenth white, and the rest were free blacks and people of mixed races. Hundreds more slaves were brought to Belize before the slave trade was ended in 1807.

In reading this, i do not feel sorry for the young ladies nor anyone who views life in a "one way tunnel" frame of mind. It is good to know not just our, but the world history. As we read and recieve the knowledge we so importantly need, we find ourselve's seeing the wrong's of history past and sadly seeing that it become's repeated in our own time. Slavery has turned into indentured servitude. communism to terrorism. religious power's to state and government. The mind of is first introduced to life by the parent's then the environment that is chosen for them. If your taught to respect everyone the same, then you more likely believe that you treat people how you would like to be treated. For some, it's live for self. I think i could guess how she was probably taught.
WHAT U SAID RIGHT THERE CAN TOUCH SO MANY DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE PROBLEMS WE ARE GOING THRU NOW THRU OUT THE WORLD....IT SOUND LIKE COMMON SENSE BUT SENSE IS NOW LONGER COMMON ...
Right on man!

Yo..I read what you wrote on your hip hop site about the black latina your cousin tried to holla at. I really wish I was there. I don't know if you remember, but I'm Panamanian. Which means I'm hispanic. And obviously, I'm black. Which means I am both %100 hispanic and %100 black. So many times in my life people have asked me which one I was. I am simply both. It's like asking me if I'm tall or am I male. I'm a tall man. All black people in this Eastern hemisphere are here as a result of the slave trade. We were then absorbed into, and absorbed into us, the culture that we were forced to live within. That is why it is called the black diaspora. Black people are part of many cultures: Hispanic, american, african, french, english. We are all black. Brothers and sisters separated a very long time ago, and grew up in different places, however, brothers and sisters we are none the less. I would have loved to tell that girl that...and I would have said some of it in spanish. The look on her face would have been priceless. Peace brother, and thanks for laying out my history....by:Atlas/Embuia/Bones
We are all brothers and sisters. All One. No matter what color, race, origin or beliefs! Much love to all.
Maybe she doesn't care about her history.....It's quite possible that she is on some different shit....you know that "high on a pedastool"...."I'm better then you".....type BS that alot of people be on these days.....she looked stupid because she popped off at the mouth and acted like she couldn't associate with ya'll, not because she doesn't "know" her history....she quite possibly could know her history but is ashamed or thinks she is BETTER then....whatever the case....I sure learned something new by reading this.....lemme just say this though....."IGNORANCE IS IGNORANCE"
